Custom design is the way to go if you can afford it. If you can't afford it, start with a custom designed logo. And ask the custom designer if they also offer some templates. Some of those 'free' templates sound to good to be true. Its like buying a nice watch from some dude selling them from the inside of his suit coat on the street.
